NADRA launches First Annual National Deck Competition
The North American Deck and Railing Association, now in its sixth year, has decided it's time to launch the First Annual NADRA National Deck Competition. The contest will award builders for their work in various traditional categories: Pressure treated deck, western red cedar deck, redwood deck, alternative deck less than 500 square feet, alternative deck more than 500 square feet, exotic wood deck less than 500 square feet and exotic wood deck more than 500 square feet.
And for builders who spend time on some of those special projects, there are categories such as Best Illumination and Best Unique Feature. And of course, the Best Overall Deck Project takes it all! More
NADRA headed to Baltimore!
NADRA HQ is headed to Baltimore today for a site review of the National Aquairum and The Hyatt, NADRA's official hotel during DeckExpo. We are very excited to wrap up some last minute details! If you haven't registered for the awards dinner yet, please do so by following the links below. NADRA-member Sequoia Supply will announce the winner of its Deck Builder's Challenge on Oct. 2, at the Rocktoberfest celebration in Hatfield Township, Pa. Rocktoberfest will take place at the Sequoia Supply located at 1700 Cowpath Road, Hatfield, Pa. The celebration will feature a car show and live music. There will be breakfast and lunch fare, kid's attractions, Sequoia Out Back's big end of the year sale and the grand opening of The Toy Box at Sequoia Out Back. The Toy Box will be a state of the art car storage facility and car museum at the Hatfield location. Sequoia Out Back will also start selling garage storage solutions and cabinets in many price levels. More

GDP up in second quarter of 2010

Despite the nation's sluggish economy, nonresidential fixed investment jumped 17 percent in the second quarter of 2010 following a revised 7.8 percent increase in the first quarter, according to the U.S. Commerce Department's July 30 gross domestic product (GDP) report. Fixed investment in nonresidential structures increased 5.2 percent in the second quarter following seven straight quarters of losses. Fixed investment in nonresidential equipment and software spiked up 21.9 percent following a 20.4 percent increase in the first quarter of the year. More
Survey: Small business economic confidence tempered by slow recovery
Uncertainty about the economic recovery has caused 61 percent of small business owners to delay their expectation of an economic rebound until 2011 or later, while over 18 percent feel a turnaround will happen in 2010 and 20 percent are unsure, according to the most recent Business Confidence Survey released by Administaff, a leading provider of human resources services for small and medium-sized businesses. At the Kettelhut Construction work site where one of the Purdue University's residence halls is being renovated, the superintendent proudly sports a "Sisters in the Brotherhood" sticker on her hard hat. oy Stokes, 46, of Brookston, is in charge of the $6.9 million project and oversees about a dozen Kettelhut workers along with 27 subcontractors. She recently completed an 18-month Carpenters International Training program. Stokes was one of the first two women to graduate from the program. But despite her credentials and 27 years experience in construction, Stokes said she still faces difficulties as a woman in the male-dominated field. More
