NADRA Atlanta Chapter — August meeting recap
NADRA
We had a great turn out last night at The Ivy in Buckhead Georgia. As the crowd of 40 plus people shuffled in we had some time for to socialize and gather our food and beverages. The meeting started at 6:15 and it was so nice to see our members as well and a few new faces!

We started by going over the Anti-trust Statement. Ginny Tibbets then went over the minutes and we got down to business with the evening sponsor Weyerhaeuser. Mark Barbour talked briefly about his company and then talked about a new product Resysta that they have had some great success with. Jan Spittleburg from JSphotoFX was our guest speaker; Jan gave our members a great schooling on photography. Read more

Affordable housing is drawing people away from the coasts
By Archita Datta Majumdar
An analysis of Red Fin data shows that inland cities — like Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; Oklahoma City; Austin, Texas; and Provo, Utah — are luring in young American families with their housing affordability, low cost of living and economic growth. In fact, according to census data, these inward moves have upped by 10 percent in the last seven years. The trend has definitely shifted, with the fastest-growing cities now being inland metros instead of the chic coastal megalopolises like Los Angeles and New York City.

This manufacturer does well by paying well
Yahoo News
When a new CEO arrives at a financially strapped American manufacturer in the thick of a nasty recession, paying factory workers better is usually not one of the boss’s first priorities. But it was one of the first things Ron Kaplan did after taking over Trex Co., the big maker of composite decking, in early 2008, as the company struggled with a brutal economic downturn and self-inflicted financial difficulties.

Despite price declines, most sawmills expect better business
Woodworking Network
North American hardwood sawmills were generally happy with the pace of business during the first half of August. While sales have slowed, as is normal in August, warehouses have not filled up. Mills in most areas have enough logs for this time of year, with the exception of parts of the south, where wet weather has restricted logging.

Deck staining
KPLC-TV
Summer is winding down, but there's still plenty of time to enjoy your backyard. If your deck is looking a little drab, Angie's List looks at whether you should paint or stain your deck. Most experts say to stick with the stain, since most deck surface are horizontal, and paint tends to hold water.

Experts: Use care with pressure washers

Is there grime on your siding that good old-fashioned elbow grease won't take away? Stains on your concrete driveway? Is the deck looking dirty? Power washing or pressure washing — the terms are used almost interchangeably — might be an option. “People find it so powerful,” said Ken Collier, editor-in-chief of The Family Handyman magazine. “It's so fast and it's so liberating.”

LEADERSHIP

The importance of momentum in marketing
By Randall Craig
What is the difference between a successful marketing campaign and an unsuccessful one? ROI is certainly the standard answer, but it is also completely insufficient. A single marketing campaign is not much different than a car going uphill, battling gravity with a driver giving a single pump of the gas pedal. Let off the gas, and it will eventually slow down, stop and then start rolling downhill. Likewise, the inertia of the market — competitive noise, client disinterest and short-term memories — can only be overcome with more than a single pump of marketing energy.
