In the world of decking, the growth belongs to an "ultra-low maintenance" category — decks made with a durable coextruded capstock and cellular PVC, according to speakers at a Principia Partners conference. Several speakers even predicted the ultra-low maintenance decking will overtake traditional wood-plastic composite decking (WPC), which has experienced some problems with mildew, color fading and staining. Standard, uncapped WPC decking could become a lower-end product fighting it out with wood decking, they said. More

Recovery in building is forecast for 2011

The nation's construction industry, virtually on life support during the economic downturn, will begin a slow recovery next year, according to a forecast released recently. Next year, the value of new projects that start construction is expected to climb to $445.5 billion, an 8 percent rise from this year when that figure hit a post-recession low, according to the closely watched McGraw-Hill Construction forecast. US existing home sales rise, supply edges down
Sales of previously owned U.S. homes rose a greater-than-expected 10 percent in September but remained at depressed levels that point to a painful and protracted recovery for the housing market. The rise took sales to an annual rate of 4.53 million units, the National Association of Realtors said recently. It was the second monthly gain and far outstripped economists' expectations for an increase to a 4.30 million-unit pace. More

Construction employment declined in 236 out of 337 metropolitan areas between September 2009 and September 2010 according to a new analysis of federal employment data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. Meanwhile, the number of metro areas adding jobs (56) matched the previous month's data, indicating the sector remains weak more than a year after the official end of the recession, association officials noted. Confidence slightly up for small-business owners

Small-business owners showed more confidence in the economy this month as a Discover Financial Services survey posted its biggest one-month gain since April. The four-year-old monthly index rose to 84.2 in October, up 10.4 points from September. In August, it fell to 73, the lowest point in 1 1/2 years. In the latest poll, 28 percent of small-business owners surveyed said they expect economic conditions for their businesses to improve in the next six months, up from 20 percent last month. That figure reached 30 percent earlier this year before sliding. More
