NADRA Members, Real Outdoor Living builds wood playset for 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'
Real Outdoor Living, the wood promotion program managed by the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers' Association recently partnered with the prime-time ABC hit "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" as the program launched the largest rebuilding effort in the history of the show: seven homes for seven families in seven days, plus an outdoor park overhaul, all for the good people of Joplin, Mo. On May 22, Cunningham Park in Joplin was completely devastated when an EF-5 tornado ripped through the town. Hundreds of trees came down, the existing playset was demolished and a city pool was completely destroyed. The producers of EMHE approached Real Outdoor Living with a very specific request: design and build a spectacular playground constructed completely of real wood, to give the children of Joplin a place to play again. Construction concerns: Delaminated plywood
Fire Engineering Share
Plywood is a manufactured wood product, most commonly available in sheets 4 feet by 8 feet and in several thicknesses and finishes for different uses. Plywood is made of thin layers of wood glued together; the grain in a layer runs perpendicular to the grain in adjacent layers. If the plywood is marked as exterior grade (with an "X" following the other grade letters), the glue used to assemble the sheets is more water-resistant than the glue in plywood for interior use. Red frames add colorful protection to new Dana Point, Calif., homes
The Orange County Register Share
Framing being erected for six homes on a private cul-de-sac in The Cove neighborhood in Dana Point, Calif., is made of red wood. Not redwood, as in giant sequoias. Wood that is literally fire-engine red. The lumber is coated with dyed fire-inhibiting mold, wood-rot and termite protection that maker Eco Building Products says is a step up from the company's BluWood chemistry that it has used to treat lumber for six years. Home improvement will bounce back next year
The Motley Fool Share
It's been a rough year for companies behind big-ticket home projects, but relief may be on the way. Shares of Trex climbed 9 percent, and it wasn't because the leading maker of wood-alternative decking material posted blowout quarterly results. It may have seen net sales climb 12 percent to $67.9 million and posted a substantially narrower deficit of $0.03 a share, but analysts were expecting an even smaller loss on a 14 percent top-line boost. Websites still hold unique value to builders
Long gone are the days when builders didn't deem it necessary to have a strong presence on the Web. Today an interactive website that engages clients is rather commonplace among the homebuilder community. But that doesn't necessarily mean the Web cannot still be a differentiating factor for today's homebuilder. More
