Lumberyards object to state wood tax

Some California lumber sellers are angry about a new state tax on 2-by-4s, plywood and other forest products, and they want to make sure that their customers blame the governor and legislators for the upcoming hike in building costs. The 1 percent special assessment, proposed by California Gov. Jerry Brown and approved in September by lawmakers, is expected to raise $35 million a year to pay for the regulation of commercial forest lands and for firefighting and prevention. More

The Canadian wood products industry is expected to quadruple its profits this year as a result of a slowly strengthening U.S. housing market, according to the Conference Board of Canada. In a glowing report on the outlook for lumber and panel-board, the Conference Board says that profits will double again in 2013 and continue to rise for the entire five-year period of the forecast.
