Small Business Saturday, a day set aside to celebrate and shop at small businesses was created four years ago by American Express to rally people to shop local during the busy holiday season. It'll also be here before you know it. Small Business Saturday is always held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving — this year it's on Nov. 29.

"Veterans are 45 percent more likely to be self-employed than non-veterans." That's according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. "About 2.4 million or 9 percent of all U.S. small businesses are veteran-owned." And veteran-owned businesses represent about $1 trillion in annual sales.

Why are fewer small business owners feeling successful?

Fewer small business owners perceive themselves as successful now than did at the start of the economic recovery, a Wells Fargo-Gallup survey of a representative sample of 601 small business owners reveals. In 2009, 43 percent of small business owners reported feeling "extremely" or "very successful as a small-business owner." By 2014 that fraction had eroded to 37 percent.
