IRS plans to step up small-business audits

The head of the IRS's small-business unit said his division expects to move from focusing on audits of small corporations to partnerships. During a speech at the American Institute of CPAs' National Tax Conference in Washington, D.C., Faris Fink, the commissioner in charge of the IRS's Small Business/Self-Employed Division reportedly told attendees that his unit would make a top priority of auditing the tax returns of partnerships and other pass-through entities.

Survey: Majority of small businesses feel they will be unable to secure comprehensive, affordable health care in 2014

More than a month after the launch of the new health care system, a majority of small and micro-business owners trying to enroll believe they will be unable to secure affordable health care coverage in the new year, according to a new survey by NASE. The NASE membership survey was conducted online Nov. 7-20 and is comprised of 498 small and micro-business owners from across the country.

Nearly 70% of self-employed workers aren't saving enough for retirement

Self-employment comes with many freedoms but also with heightened financial responsibilities. While the traditionally employed can enroll in company-sponsored 401(k) plans that make automatic, regular retirement contributions, self-employed workers don't have this option. And nearly 70 percent of them are not saving sufficiently, according to a new survey of 2,014 U.S. residents from TD Ameritrade.

Most small-business owners lack necessary accounting skills

While the majority of small-business owners claim they are confident about managing their finances, only 45 percent can define basic accounting principles. A survey conducted by Staples, the office supplier, revealed that 94 percent of small-business owners said they can manage their finances, yet less than half can define the basic accounting principles such as "accounts receivable" and "accounts payable."

Central Texas small-business health plan gets a reboot

A health plan program for small businesses in Central Texas has a new lease on life after being rebooted with a fresh round of funding from the state. Several Austin area nonprofits have already signed up under the TexHealth Central Texas umbrella. TexHealth offers a subsidy of as much as $120 a month for employees at qualifying small businesses to supplement health insurance premium costs.
