Message from the NFAIS Executive Director:

Marcie Granahan,
NFAIS Executive Director
Facebook has solidified its position as a major player in referral traffic to news publishers with the launch of Instant Articles. Roger Schonfeld, Director, Library and Scholarly Communication Program, Ithaka S+R, writes ("Grab and Go and the Gravitational Pull of Discovery") about its significance to the information and scholarly research community. You’ll also want to check out Facebook begins testing instant articles from news publishers and Mobile first, but what’s next? in this week’s edition of NFAIS Advances. And be sure to join the discussion in the NFAIS Advances Community Forum, where I question how the expanding distribution economy is changing how we do business.

These are interesting times for the information community, as we move towards greater accessibility, discoverability, interoperability, and mobility. At the crux is the content platform, offering a seamless experience for users and opening the door to new discoveries. Platform technology is evolving rapidly, and older systems are often inadequate in meeting current user expectations. On Thursday, June 18 at The Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, NFAIS is holding a special workshop on “Platforms that Perform: Taking Your Content to the Next Level”. This in-person and virtual event features government, nonprofit and publishing executives who discuss their experiences in deciding to transition to new upgraded platforms, and the lessons they learned in the selection, adoption and migration process. We hope you can join us.

As always, I hope you enjoy reading NFAIS Advances!

Marcie Granahan
Executive Director

    Mobile first, but what's next?
    TechCrunch
The ascendance of mobile devices, cloud computing and big data is having a profound impact on the lives of workers. Yet many of the business applications that run on their smartphones and tablets still fail miserably to take full advantage of this revolutionary shift. Even services that tout themselves as “mobile first” often fall short of delivering novel functionality that boosts productivity and profit.

Facebook begins testing instant articles from news publishers
    The New York Times
Facebook’s long-rumored plan to directly host articles from news organizations started on May 15, concluding months of delicate negotiations between the Internet giant and publishers that covet its huge audience but fear its growing power. Nine media companies, including NBC News and The New York Times, have agreed to the deal, despite concerns that their participation could eventually undermine their own businesses.

Grab and go and the gravitational pull of discovery
    The Scholarly Kitchen
The recent news that Facebook has launched its Instant Article initiative, whereby it hosts selected news and magazine content rather than linking to another website, is a good reminder about the changing power dynamics that shifts in discovery practices are introducing. The New York Times’ coverage of this launch focuses extensively on its implications for The Times itself, which is one of less than a dozen publishers that is experimenting with what is for the news industry a new content distribution paradigm.

Facebook Instant Articles: Bad for marketers, OK for publishers, but great for Facebook
    HubSpot Blogs
When Facebook recently launched Instant Articles, the internet and publishing community was buzzing. Publishers were excited – by hosting their own articles within Facebook but still displaying their own ads, they could generate more traffic and attention from the Facebook community. Users were also excited – Instant Articles are much faster and more interactive than typical mobile websites. And with the buzz came many important questions for marketers.

Why is the university still here?
    TechCrunch
Universities are supposed to be dead. These bastions of higher learning have been on Silicon Valley’s hit list for much of the past decade, and disruption phasers targeting the industry have certainly been set to kill in the years since the global financial crisis. And yet after years of efforts, we have arrived in 2015 and almost nothing seems to have changed about the way we get our degrees or even just our continuing coursework.
