California's Golden Valley High School program promotes positive role models

Athletes often become celebrities on a high school campus, but educators want to make sure those celebrated students are positive role models too. That's some of the reasoning behind the Pursuing Victory with Honor Program at Golden Valley High School in Merced, Calif. "The goals of the program are to promote and celebrate good character as well as to foster leadership among our student athletes," said Julie Rivard, associate principal for athletics and activities.

Illinois sophomore leaps to national record in triple jump

It took Cahokia, Ill.'s Ja'Mari Ward less then half a season to establish himself as the top freshman in the nation in the long jump and triple jump a year ago; Establishing himself as the premier sophomore in the country didn't take nearly as long. Competing at the Triad Knights Indoor Invitational at Principia College in Elsah, Ward broke the national record for a sophomore with a winning leap of 50 feet 2 1/2 inches in the triple jump.

Nebraska High school athletes who transfer could face more sideline time
The Omaha World Herald
High school athletes in Nebraska might think twice before switching schools if lawmakers approve a bill up for hearing. Under the bill, athletes who transferred after May 1, without changing residence, would be ineligible to participate in varsity sports for 180 school days. That would eliminate them from competition for a whole school year.

Rule changes in soccer require injured goalkeepers to leave game

The National Federation of State High School Associations Soccer Rules Committee approved two rules changes during its Jan. 27-29 meeting in Indianapolis. The recommended rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors. The committee approved a requirement that a goalkeeper must leave the field when he or she is injured and the referee has stopped the clock. This decision was made in order to minimize the risk of further injury.
