Dave Dean of Lowell High School in Michigan is the 2014 NHSCA National High School Wrestling Coach of the Year. In nine years as the head coach at Lowell, Dean has built the Red Arrows program into one of the best in Michigan while also gaining attention on the national level.

Record number of entrants set to battle at NHSCA National Wrestling Championships

The 25th annual NHSCA High School National Wrestling Championships will break a record for number of entrants, with 3,367 wrestlers from 47 states and Germany entered for the competition that will take place in Virginia Beach, Va. The size of this year's field shatters the old record of 2,800 which was set in 2013.

There's no better way to cap a high school wrestling career than by winning an NHSCA Senior Nationals Championship. A piece of legislation labeled H.B. 503 is barreling its way through the Alabama State Legislature. It is commonly referred to as "The Tim Tebow Bill" across Alabama. Tebow was the Heisman Trophy winner and National Champion at the University of Florida. The quarterback was home schooled and allowed to participate in the Florida High School Athletic Association.

Wyoming football coach says children should play all the school sports

Tucked away in a recent interview with new University of Wyoming football coach Craig Bohl was a surprise. The question to the coach was whether Bohl was concerned about the future of his sport. The short answer: He is. And even though he did talk about making his sport safer as important to the future of football, his quick answer to the question was "sports specialization."

Louisiana High School Athletic Association reverses itself, allows sick teen to play baseball

It took a federal lawsuit against the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to help achieve it, but Family Christian Academy student Sean Thiel is now hearing the words he longed to hear: "Play ball!" After initially declaring Thiel, a Baton Rouge sophomore with a life-altering illness, ineligible to compete on the baseball diamond because he missed too much school, the LHSAA — after the March 3 filing of the federal suit — decided to grant him a hardship waiver that allowed him to take the field.

Jury finds helmet maker not responsible for football player's injury

It was a collision that rewrote the future of a young man: Edward Acuna, a football team captain on the verge of heading off to college would instead become a childlike invalid who struggled to tie his shoes. Four years later, a Los Angeles jury deliberated for less than 30 minutes and decided that Acuna's severe brain injury could not have been prevented by his Riddell Revolution helmet.

High school baseball player saves umpire's life during game

A high school baseball player in Georgia became a hero after he saved the umpire's life during a game in Newton County. Alex Norwood, 16, quickly jumped into action after the umpire collapsed on the field behind the batter. Norwood said his instincts just kicked in and he knew he had to help.

'Will to Succeed' foundation offering free brain testing for Missouri athletes

The "Will to Succeed" foundation is offering a brain test for student athletes in Missouri. The new technology is called "Dynavision 2." Twelve-year-old Ryan Linkletter boosted his batting average from .300 to .455 in three weeks. Instead of a batting cage, however, Linkletter used a test where his brain is trained by a series of flashing lights.
