Kenneth Frank becomes first New Jersey baseball coach to win 800 games

Toms River South, Toms River, N.J., coach Kenneth Frank became the first baseball coach in New Jersey history to win 800 games, as his team defeated Bayonne 7-2 for the historic victory. Frank, who got his first win in April of 1978, has coached varsity baseball for 36 years, all of them at Toms River South where he has built one of the state's top baseball programs.

Maryland endorses Heads Up Football program

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association endorsed USA Football's Heads Up Football safety program. The association, which includes public high schools from Maryland's 24 school districts, is the first state high school sports assocation to endorse the program.

Virginia girl sets national high school lacrosse assist record

Corinne Wessels began her senior season as America's No. 2 player all-time when it came to lacrosse assists. Wessels, the Manassas, Va., senior, put herself one spot higher when she set the National Federation of State High School Associations record with assist No. 290. She finished the contest against Hylton with four assists, moving to 292 in her career.

Backstroke finish among major swimming. diving rule changes
High School OT
A major change in the finish of the backstroke event will occur next year in high school swimming and diving. Effective with the 2014-15 season, any part of a swimmer's body must be on or above the water at the finish of the backstroke event. Previously, a swimmer in the backstroke could submerge on the turn and/or finish.

Pediatricians say training can help teens avoid knee injuries

If you're a teenage athlete, or the parent of one, you probably live in fear of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, one of the knee's key stabilizing ligaments. A torn ACL often requires surgical repair. But so-called neuromuscular training programs can cut the risk of a serious ACL injury and should be recommended to at-risk young athletes, especially girls, according to a clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
