New Jersey school cancels football season amid criminal probe

The football season at a storied New Jersey high school has been canceled amid "significant and serious" allegations of harassment, intimidation and bullying. The development follows word of a criminal investigation by the county prosecutor, which Sayreville Schools Superintendent Rich Labbe said he could not discuss.

Player claims he was 'catfished' into committing to Florida

A high school football player in Nash County, North Carolina, celebrated his commitment to the University of Florida by donning a Gators' cap — but his excitement didn't last long. According to the Rocky Mount Telegram, Nash Central defensive end Houshun Gaines claims he was "catfished" by someone pretending to be recruiting for the Florida Gators.

Some parents not happy high school football game runs past midnight

While Central Texans were watching the lightning show during the storm on Oct. 2, two high school football teams were in a holding pattern. The Buda Hays-Anderson game came to a halt around 9:30 p.m. with about 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter. After a two-hour delay, coaches decided to bring the players back on the field at 11:15 p.m. to finish the game which ended at 12:15 a.m.

Bishop Episcopal High School in Dallas needed a new football field. So they decided to go all out and turn it blue. They soon realized Boise State had a trademark on blue fields. The school says they made a call to BSU and asked for permission, with the approval process lasting about a week.

A policy in Minnesota covering sports participation by transgender students was an attempt to grapple with a question that has bedeviled many states: How do you deal with the growing number of children identifying as transgender who want to participate in the highly gender-specific worlds of high school sports and extracurricular activities? School systems have scrambled to adopt policies to deal with these students while also being sensitive to concerns over locker-room privacy and any advantages a more physically imposing transgender female might have on the field against other girls.

High school athletic trainers wear many hats. On any given day, they might work as a paramedic, a psychologist, a physical therapist, a coach or a teacher. No matter what role they find themselves playing, their top priority is keeping high school athletes safe. "For me, making sure our athletes are healthy is my first concern. Winning is my second," said Jeff Hopp, athletic trainer at Marietta (Georgia) High School.

Scoring in baseball is down. Blame the umpires

Scoring continued to dip in Major League Baseball this season. Teams averaged 4.07 runs a game, compared with 4.17 last year, or more dramatically 5.14 in 2000. Although the sport added stricter drug testing in 2006, there could be another cause for the scoring decline: umpiring.
