COACHING NEWS

Developing a high school football team
By Scoop Reed
Coaching is not just about winning and not just about teaching a set of skills. It is about passing on a way to look at the world and succeed in it. As coaches we are here to create independent, self-reliant, mature young people. To create this we have to give them life skills that will last them long after football. At the very core of what we believe is that those life skills will create a winning culture. For a high school football team to be successful, there must be 61 "contributing players."

Youth football team runs trick play to perfection
Haboob Blog
VideoBriefA wise man once said that deception is just a part of life. And if no one has said that, someone should. Anyway, those words are rarely more evident than on a football field, where teams do all they can to outsmart their opponents. As such, tomofoolery often comes into the equation. Take, for instance, a play between the Hialeah Cougars and the Dania Beach Bears in Florida.

WCBS-TV
A growing number of schools are turning to technology to identify concussions as soon as they happen on the football field. But the technology might not always be reliable, researchers found. The light is supposed to flash yellow after a moderate impact to the head and red after a severe one. The devices are marketed as a way to help coaches and parents measure whether a hit is too hard.

TODAY
Next year, your workout is going to get a lot more intense. Once the domain of fitness fanatics, high-intensity interval training is poised to hit the mainstream in 2014, according to a new survey from the American College of Sports Medicine. "We've never seen something be introduced to the market and catch on so fast," says Walt Thompson, regents' professor of kinesiology at Georgia State University and lead author of the ACSM report.

Protecting young knees from injury associated with exercise
By Heidi Dawson
Knee pain is something that is too often associated with just the older population. But knee pain is also a common complaint in younger people — especially those who exercise regularly. In some cases, it can be so uncomfortable either during exercise or after, that it is a factor in adolescents ceasing to exercise altogether. While in the short term this may be beneficial for their knee pain, in the long run this is clearly detrimental to their overall health. For this reason, it is vital that we help protect young athletes from knee pain. And when it does occur, we must deal with it from the onset.

This 7-minute workout may be more effective than an hour of cardio
STACK
On a recent business trip, Chris Jordan struggled to find time for some much-needed exercise. "It was one of those moments when there are all sorts of barriers to training," Jordan says. "I was in a hotel in Hong Kong. I wasn't sure whether there was a gym or not." But he didn't blink. With some space on the floor, a wall and a chair, he blasted through a seven-minute workout scientifically designed to deliver the maximum training effect in a minimum amount of time.
