Pawnshop stops Detroit Public Schools laptop theft

A teacher with Detroit Public Schools has been suspended after she allegedly tried to pawn a district laptop computer. The teacher is accused of trying to pawn a new netbook computer, a smaller and less expensive version of a traditional laptop worth about $724, at American Jewelry and Loan in Detroit. The store refused to pay the teacher and instead confiscated it and contacted the district, said Steve Wasko, a district spokesman. More

A 20-year veteran of the Akron police force in Ohio has pleaded guilty to a felony charge that he improperly used a law enforcement database to investigate parents regarding residency questions for Copley-Fairlawn schools. Sgt. Gary Webb, 47, resigned from the department in anticipation of his appearance in Summit County Common Pleas Court. Webb pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree felony and was given six months of probation by Judge Patricia A. Cosgrove. More

Back-to-back episodes at 10 and 10:30 p.m. out delivered the show's record-setting Aug. 16 launch. "Hardcore Pawn" also gave truTV a victory as cable's No. 1 entertainment network in delivery of men 18-49 for the 10 p.m. hour, with a second-place finish among adults 18-49. More



New pawnshop rules aim to curb theft in Idaho

Authorities hope changes to a Lewiston city ordinance in Idaho requiring pawnshops to upload receipts electronically will help police officers better track stolen goods before they are resold. The northern Idaho city's pawnshops would have to submit sales slips electronically and keep items on hand for two weeks before they are resold. The shops now submit hard copies of pawn slips to Lewiston police, who have to enter the information on the pawned items into their database by hand. More
