Wealthy flock to pawnshops
CNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mark Friedman is an investor and bail bondsman to the stars. Inside a room with an armed guard in a building in Beverly Hills, Calif., he is getting ready to pick up his wife's five-carat wedding ring which he pawned earlier for some quick cash. "I'm in the real estate business, and sometimes you need to come up with $50,000 to $100,000 on the spot," he said. "You can't take the jewels to Bank of America downstairs when you got to get money that day, so you come to Beverly Loan." Beverly Loan Company is a high-end pawnshop three floors above the Bank of America branch on Santa Monica Boulevard. CEO Jordan Tabach-Bank's grandfather started the company 75 years ago. More

A Richmond man pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing a truck loaded with audiovisual equipment intended for use by President Barack Obama. Wearing leg shackles and a blue jail jumpsuit, Eric Brown, 49, was found guilty by U.S. District Judge John A. Gibney Jr., who will sentence him on April 11. Brown faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for theft of government property, though he and the government agree a term of seven years is appropriate. … A criminal complaint filed against Brown alleges he boasted of his role in the theft, sold a stolen laptop computer from the truck and kept equipment that still contained the presidential seal. Investigators also obtained cellphone records that showed Brown was in the vicinity of the truck at the time it was stolen. Some of the equipment was recovered from pawnshops in Maryland. More
