We are just a month past Christmas, now many of us are pinching pennies trying to recover from blowing through some serious cash. The thing is, we still have to spend money on necessities. In WGME's saving you money segment, we work on keeping more cash in your wallet and even making a little money by going to a pawnshop.

Wal-Mart customers can pick up their tax refunds in cash

The service is an alternative for taxpayers who otherwise might get refunds via check or direct deposit. Wal-Mart says it won't charge customers any fee to pick up the cash at its stores, but that tax preparers may charge up to $7 to arrange the payment. Wal-Mart will certainly benefit from having customers in the store with a fresh infusion of cash. "It's always a good thing to have customers in our stores who have jingles in their wallets and their pockets," said Daniel Eckert, senior vice president for services for Wal-Mart.

Police seize guns, computers and cars from two Illinois pawnshops

Springfield, Illinois, police say a pair of local pawn shops had developed a reputation as the places to go when selling stolen merchandise. Police recently served warrants at both locations, recovering what they say are more than 130 stolen items, including 28 cars.

First renderings released for Badlands Pawn in South Dakota

The first images have been released showing plans for Badlands Pawn, Gold & Jewelry in South Dakota. The $15 million project is the brainchild of entrepreneur and Dollar Loan Center founder Chuck Brennan. It's being built across Russell Street from the Denny Sanford Premier Center and Sioux Falls Convention Center and is scheduled to open Nov. 26.

Smith & Wesson fired up investors by saying it sees "recent, positive trends" in the consumer firearm market, and that's likely to translate directly into higher profits for the gun maker. The firearm company feels so confident that it raised its sales and earnings targets for 2015 above what Wall Street had been banking on.
