A man was sentenced to more than 20 years in federal prison for his role as the triggerman in the November 2010 armed robbery at the Welsh Pawn Shop in Savannah, Ga. Damien Maurice Singleton, 21, also must serve a five-year supervised release term after he completes his 243-month sentence, U.S. District Judge William T. Moore Jr. ruled. More

Frank Puryear sees a lot of what one would expect to find at a pawnshop — jewelry, coins, firearms. Then there's the antique, slot-style cigarette dispenser that his store, Pawn Stars of Mississippi in Flowood, recently bought and has found a potential buyer for in Louisiana. A vintage candy machine and an old American Indian coat with a collar made of animal fur also have graced the shop. Such is the state of the pawnbroker industry these days, with more customers coming in because of a still-recovering economy and the popularity of reality-TV shows like "Pawn Stars", "Cajun Pawn Stars" and "Hardcore Pawn". More

City and law enforcement officials want to expand the number of secondhand shops required to file their transactions with the Austin Police Department. A proposed policy would require businesses to share their records with authorities daily using a free online reporting system and would include those selling jewelry and used electronic goods that can be tracked by serial numbers, such as film and audio equipment, musical instruments, video games and cellphones. More
