Microsoft's Outlook takes aim at Google's Gmail

Microsoft is so confident it has the Internet's best email service that it is about to spend at least $30 million to send its message across the U.S. The barrage begins when Microsoft's twist on email, Outlook.com, escalates an assault on rival services from Google Inc., Yahoo Inc., AOL Inc. and a long list of Internet service providers.

Pawnshop: Windsor Heights, Iowa, debates business

Most cities are trying to lure businesses, and the jobs that come with them, but in Windsor Heights, Iowa, some people are trying to keep a new business out. Sitting just off the ramp of I-235 in Windsor Heights, is a strip mall and the potential home of a new pawnshop. It's something that business owner Dick Woltz isn't too happy about. "Right or wrong a pawnshop carries a certain stigma and perception to it and the general public does not view that as good perception."

Pawnshop inspections to start in Florida

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has begun regular inspections of Florida Keys pawnshops and secondhand dealers with an eye on compliance with state record-keeping laws. Florida statute requires that pawn and secondhand shops keep detailed electronic transaction records using a system called RAPID, or the Regional Automated Property Information Database.

After a little over six years to the day, Detour Gold Corp. has taken its Detour Lake Mine from an exploration property to what is expected to be Canada's largest gold producer. Detour acquired the property Jan. 31, 2007 and poured its first gold bars Monday, Feb. 18, totaling over 2,000 ounces and generating $3.5 million in revenue.

North Carolina bill would make payday loans legal

Payday loans were outlawed in North Carolina over a decade ago, but soon they could making their way back to check cashing stores. Senate Bill 89 would amend the Check Cashing Licensing Act to allow check cashers and lenders the ability to pay out cash loans of up to $500, for a fee of 15 percent of the cash advance. People would also have to pay off the loans before taking out another one.

Feds investigate theft of guns from Missouri pawnshop

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating the theft of 23 firearms from an Ozark, Mo., pawnshop. Federal authorities were led to four suspects. Two suspects, the warrant says, cooperated with ATF agents and provided a location where two of the stolen guns were sold.

Idaho man sentenced for swiping 33 guns from pawnshop

A Clark Fork, Idaho, man convicted for stealing guns from a north Idaho pawnshop will be spending 11 months in a federal prison. Nineteen-year-old Christopher Robin Garlin was also sentenced to three years of supervision upon release and ordered to pay more than $8,100 in restitution.
