EZCorp scoops up 12 Central Texas pawnshops in $17 million deal

EZCorp Inc. said it has completed the acquisition of 12 pawn stores in Central Texas doing business under the "Cash Pawn" brand. The Cash Pawn business has been in operation since 1979. The deal was worth $16.75 million, including $5 million in cash and nearly 1.7 million EZCorp (shares, priced at $10.06 per share, issued in a private placement transaction, the company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Justice Department investigating major banks over precious metals pricing

U.S. officials are investigating at least 10 major banks for possible rigging of precious-metals markets, even though European regulators dropped a similar probe after finding no evidence of wrongdoing, according to people close to the inquiries. Prosecutors in the Justice Department's antitrust division are scrutinizing the price-setting process for gold, silver, platinum and palladium in London, while the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has opened a civil investigation, these people said.

Brevard County Sheriff's Office deputies in Florida arrest a suspected home burglar, and its all thanks to the hands-on approach of an armed pawnshop owner. Surveillance video showed 29-year-old William Douglass Hasencamp walking into the pawnshop to pawn an item.

16 arrested after stolen goods investigation leads to pawnshop in Rhode Island

Fourteen adults and two juveniles have been arrested following the discovery of a "fencing" operation in which stolen merchandise was allegedly funneled through a Cranston, Rhode Island, pawnshop. Photographs of the recovered items can be found online through the Cranston Police Department's website, www.cranstonpoliceri.com, or its Facebook page.

US raises concerns over 'made in Indonesia' smartphone law

The United States is pressing Indonesia to relax local-content rules it believes will handicap efforts of tech firms such as Apple to expand into one of the world's last big markets where demand for high-end smartphone has yet to really take off. The regulation, which would come into force on Jan. 1, 2017, requires companies that sell smartphones and tablets in the fast-growing economy of 250 million people to produce 40 percent of their content locally.
