Pawnshops go mainstream

Pawnshops have become respectable. Not so long ago, they were considered a haven only for drug dealers, thieves, and the chronically poor. But in case you haven't noticed, the pawn industry has given itself a makeover. Pawnshops are now the backdrop for reality television series like "Pawn Stars" on the History channel and truTV's "Hardcore Pawn". … And there's even a chain of pawnshops — Money Mizer Pawn & Jewelry, with seven locations throughout Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. By the end of 2014, the company expects to have 16 to 18 stores open and operating.

600,000 income tax returns may be delayed

Up to 600,000 tax returns filed by H&R Block and possibly others could be delayed by up to six weeks because of a computer glitch. The problem: Form 8863, which you must fill out to get the student tax credit. The credit is equal to 100 percent of the first $2,000 of qualified expenses and 25 percent of expenses over $2,000. Maximum is $2,500.

Midvale, Utah, pawnshop owner ordered to pay $11,000 in restitution

Midvale, Utah, pawnshop owner accused of buying and selling thousands of dollars in stolen gift cards and tools was ordered to pay more than $11,000 in restitution and remain out of trouble for two years. Noel W. Hicks, 48, entered a guilty plea in abeyance Friday to a second-degree felony charge of pattern of unlawful activity, for which he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

Arkansas House approves pawnshop data legislation
The Associated Press via San Francisco Chronicle
The Arkansas House passed a measure requiring all pawnshops in the state to electronically send to law enforcement their records of who is selling property. The measure, which is aimed at helping criminal investigations, would mostly affect rural pawn shops that aren't already uploading the information to a secure tracking system.
