Asheville, N.C., officials have backed off a proposed new rule for pawnbrokers after antique dealers and others who sell secondhand goods said the rules would hurt their businesses. A city attorney and other officials now say they plan to hold a public meeting following push-back from owners of secondhand sporting goods and antique malls over the ordinance requiring purchases be entered into a national database. A northern Kentucky county is weighing requiring pawnshops and other resale businesses to "tag and hold" any copper or precious metals they purchase as a theft prevention measure. The Kenton County Fiscal Court will vote on an ordinance that would also require buyers to have an ID and photograph sellers and their items. More

County in West Virginia considers pawnshop law

Kanawha County, W. Va., officials are considering an ordinance that requires the owners of pawnshops and scrap yards to turn over serial numbers and other information to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. Authorities said that the ordinance is necessary to help track down people trying to sell stolen merchandise at pawnshops and secondhand stores, and stolen metal at scrap yards. More
