Why business is picking up for high-end pawnshops
CBS News
One of the interesting, and potentially market-changing, stories to come out of this current recession is the creation of high-end pawn operations, or what some people in the business prefer to call "collateral lenders." "Never before have we seen so many affluent individuals coming into our shop with the high-ticket items," Jordan Tabach-Bank, CEO of Beverly Loan Company in Beverly Hills, Calif., told CBS News in 2008, as the recession deepened. "We have lawyers, accountants, doctors, investment bankers."

Pawnshops for the wealthy
Crain's New York Business
Marc Kaye had to do something drastic when his children's tuition bills at Columbia and Harvard came due just as his consulting business hit a dry spell. So he pawned his Picasso. The Asahi Shimbun
On a late January weekday afternoon at a used brand goods store near Tokyo's seedy Kabukicho neighborhood, a man buying a second-hand Birkin, a luxury bag from Hermes, handed the cashier a China UnionPay debit card. Paying a hefty 1,398,000 yen ($13,651) for the item did not seem to faze the 25-year-old from China's Liaoning province, who said he planned to sell the bag in Beijing at a profit of just under 10 percent.
