Georgia pawnshop worker moves up on
'American Idol'

CP24-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Phillip Phillips didn't follow any of the advice from his "American Idol" mentors — and the judges loved him for it. The 21-year-old pawnshop worker from Leesburg, Ga., defiantly wore grey after style adviser Tommy Hilfiger deemed it too drab. He shrugged off musical mentor Diddy's mandate to dance. And he turned out a growling "Movin' Out" during an evening of Billy Joel tunes on the Fox talent contest that Randy Jackson called "one of the best renditions of that song ever." More

He had sat at the same desk, in the same store, serving the same customers, answering the same phone for more than 20 years. "Hello, Postal USA and Robbie's First Base," Robbie Davis Sr. would say cheerfully, in the back of his nondescript postal store/sports-memorabilia shop, in a nondescript strip mall, between a nondescript Chinese takeout and a nondescript hair salon, in a nondescript suburb of Baltimore. In the spring of 2010 he received a call: "Have you ever heard of 'Pawn Stars'?" the voice asked. More

Saugerties Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Before the economy went south, and reality television shows became all the thing, pawn shops were looked upon as not such savory places, where crooks would go to fence stolen goods, and lower socioeconomic individuals would go to "hock a watch" for money. ... Pawnshops have become a part of life where folks from all across the economic strata go to part with unwanted jewelry, or borrow money against family heirlooms in order to meet bills or pay the mortgage.
