Gold prices rise as clashes erupt in Ukraine

Gold for June delivery climbed $19.50 to settle at $1,302.90 an ounce. Silver for July jumped 50 cents to $19.55 an ounce. The Ukrainian government launched what appeared to be its first major offensive to regain control of an area held by pro-Russian separatists.

Trial ordered for man accused of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, pawn shop armed robbery

On the witness stand inside Lansdale, Pa., district court, the owner of the Lansdale Pawn Shop shuddered when asked how he felt during a robbery of his store in May of last year. "I thought that any moment he would shoot me," the man said while looking over at the defendant's table, where 22-year-old Ja'Kwan Emarcus Gardner, handcuffed and clad in a red prison jumpsuit, coolly stared back at him.

Zakk Wylde's custom guitar recovered at a Chicago pawnshop

A custom-made, $10,000 guitar stolen in March from heavy metal rocker Zakk Wylde’s tour bus outside The Chicago Theatre has been recovered after being sold to a Chicago pawnshop, Wylde's manager confirmed. The owners of Royal Pawn Shop said a man came in to sell the guitar on March 24 – about 10 days after it was reported stolen from Wylde's unlocked tour bus while he was performed at The Chicago Theatre as part of the Experience Hendrix Tour.

A Pennsylvania pawnshop charged with failing to record purchases
The Morning Call
A Poconos, Pa., pawnshop specializing in the resale of diamonds, jewelry and other goods allegedly failed to report its purchases to authorities as required under state and local laws to prevent the sale of stolen goods. Zakaria Hassan, 54, of Stroudsburg, Pa., an employee of Designer Diamond Outlet in the Stroud Plaza, was arrested after he purchased $85 in jewelry and electronics from an undercover police officer, authorities said.

The jury verdict in the Apple and Samsung patent infringement case awarded Apple far less than it wanted

Apple and Samsung are suing each other in courts and trade offices around the world, each making claims that the other copied patented mobile device features. The companies' most-recent legal tussle all but concluded, when a California jury found that Samsung copied some of Apple's smartphone features. The panel also concluded that Apple illegally used one of Samsung's patents in creating the iPhone 4 and 5.

Macomb County, Mich., judge upholds legality of computer network for pawn transactions
The Macomb Daily
In a win for law enforcement, the legality of police using a national computerized network of pawnshop transactions was endorsed last month by a Macomb County, Mich., judge. Judge Diane Druzinski backed a city of Warren ordinance that allows police to hook into LeadsOnline as part of state law that requires pawnshops to record all of their transactions for police review.

Maryland gun store drops plans to sell 'smart guns' after threats

A Maryland gun shop owner has dropped his plan to be the first in the United States to sell a so-called "smart gun" after a backlash that included death threats. Andy Raymond, co-owner of Engage Armament in Rockville, a Washington suburb, said he was trying to protect his business by reversing his decision to sell the Armatix iP1 .22-caliber handgun, which electronically limits the ability to fire the weapon.
