Michigan man found guilty in pawnshop murder

A Michigan man was found guilty of murdering pawnshop owner Ilya Golub during the botched robbery attempt. Darren D. Taylor, 48, was found guilty in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. On Dec. 22, 2011, Taylor, of Southfield, Mich., and two other men tried to rob the Cash To Go Pawn Shop when Golub, 53, and one of the other alleged would-be robbers, Anthony McClain, died of gunshot wounds. Golub’s wife cried after the verdict was read.

Net sales for the largest publicly traded gun manufacturer surged 39 percent to $155.9 million, compared to $112.3 million a year earlier.

Payday loans cost economy $1 billion

Payday loans cost the U.S. economy nearly $1 billion and thousands of jobs in 2011, according to a report from the Insight Center for Community Economic Development. The study says that the burden of repaying the loans resulted in $774 million in lost consumer spending and 14,000 job losses. Bankruptcies related to payday loans numbered 56,230, taking an additional $169 million out of the economy.

Family: East St. Louis pawnshop owner may never walk

The armed gunman who recently stormed into an East St. Louis, Ill., pawnshop is still on the loose and the 51-year-old owner who was shot multiple times remains in critical condition. Shopkeeper Larry Osborn is paralyzed and may never walk again, his wife Petra Osborn said. His son, Matt Osborn, said he may be paralyzed from the arm pits down as a result of the bullet wounds he sustained to his neck and shoulder.

Cellphone thefts grow, but the industry looks the other way

When a teenage boy snatched the iPhone out of Rose Cha's hand at a bus stop in the Bronx in March, she reported the theft to her carrier and to the police — just as she had done two other times when she was the victim of cellphone theft. Again, the police said they could not help her. Cha's phone was entered in a new nationwide database for stolen cellphones, which tracks a phone's unique identifying number to prevent it from being activated, theoretically discouraging thefts.

Dispatcher charged with pawning stolen fire equipment

A dispatcher for a Chicago suburban fire department has been charged with buying stolen fire equipment to sell at a south suburban pawnshop. Varndell Hurrings, 52, of Sauk Village,Ill., was charged with felony theft and released on a $20,000 personal recognizance bond, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.
