More Americans are turning to pawnshops to get by, hawking jewelry, electronics, tools and other personal items for quick cash, according to a new report by Marketdata Enterprises. Twenty-five million Americans used pawnshops last year, according to data from the National Pawnbrokers. There now are 11,000 pawnshops in the U.S. — 59 percent more than in 1988. Business is booming for a number of pawnshops that operate within a few blocks of the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagra Falls, N.Y. Unfortunately, a lot of their business comes from gamblers desperate to make up for losses at the casino. The Richmond City Commission in Virgina heard first readings of two ordinances that are designed to thwart criminals' ability to sell stolen items. The ordinances will require pawn brokers, consignment stores, junk/scrap metal dealers and other similar businesses to obtain the identities of their customers and keep records of items acquired. Phillip Phillips, a bluesy Georgia guitar man, was crowned the new "American Idol" after defeating teenager Jessica Sanchez in record viewer voting. He was the fifth male "Idol" winner in a row.
