Pawnshops adjusting to economy, too
The News Tribune    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The star of the 1964 movie, "The Pawnbroker," would likely not recognize a pawnshop 46 years later, where the price of gold has topped $1,200 per ounce, where a recession has depleted the number of buying customers and where, on the History Channel, a show called "Pawn Stars" has repainted the old gloom with a coat of glitz. "I think that was the stock Hollywood version of it that came from the movie — it was the sort of a place where unscrupulous people would come," said Emmett Murphy, spokesman for the National Pawnbrokers Association. Today, he said, pawnshops are "well-lit places. What we're seeing — people think pawn is cool." And pawnbrokers, he said, "are micro-finance lenders." More

The new touch-face of vending machines
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Vending machines in neon-splashed Tokyo have electronic eyes that evaluate customers' skin and wrinkles to determine whether they are old enough to buy tobacco. In bathrooms at upscale Canadian bars, vending machines with flat irons enable women to defrizz their locks. In Abu Dhabi, the lobby of a luxury hotel has a vending machine that dispenses gold bars and coins at more than $1,000 an ounce. More

Big box pawnshop: Sell, buy or hock at new chain store
The Capital Times via    Share    Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ryan Martin had never been in a pawnshop before so he wasn't sure what to expect when he entered the new Pawn America, carrying a Fender guitar amplifier to sell. But instead of walking into a dimly lit store in a seedy part of town, dealing with a guy behind iron bars wearing a visor, Martin was inside the former Circuit City big box in Madison, Wis., talking to a young woman in a white sports shirt. Martin ended up getting $200 cash for the amp, a good price considering he bought it used a year ago for $300. More

Need cash? Off to the pawnbroker
Toronto Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Please take a number off the wall and step into the booth," advises a sign near the back of McTamney's, the historic Church St. pawnbrokers in Toronto. The place doesn't smell like an old shoe, nor does it emit any Dickensian musk, though McTamney's has been at this location since 1916. The buy-and-sell business. There's that. And the pawnbroker business. More
