Arizonans more likely to choose pawnshops when it comes to getting cash

Arizonans were much more likely than the rest of the nation to turn to a pawnshop to get cash, according to a survey released by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, a private nonprofit. The FINRA Foundation's Financial Capability report found that 18 percent of Americans reported using a pawnshop within the past five years while 27 percent of Arizonans surveyed said they had done so.

US unemployment aid applications fall to 340k

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell by 23,000 last week, further evidence that the job market is slowly returning to health. Applications for unemployment aid declined to a seasonally adjusted 340,000 in the week ending May 18, the Labor Department said. That's down from 363,000 the previous week and a level consistent with solid job gains.

New pawnshop fee paying off

Flagstaff, Ariz., police recovered 150 stolen items given over to pawnshops and used-good stores in the most recent 12 months, worth $60,800. Items recovered included a top-of-the-line set of golf clubs, video games and jewelry. Some 27 arrests resulted.

Online pawnbrokers in Colorado say they're trying to revamp the sordid image associated pawnshops and market their merchandise to wealthier customers. "When people think of the pawnshops historically, they don't necessarily think of $100,000 pieces of jewelry," said George Souri, chief executive officer of UltraPawn. Arizona pawnshop owner/alleged meth dealer claims someone pawned Scottsdale PD uniforms

Glendale police recently served a search warrant at the home of a suspected meth dealer, and officers found a whole lot more than meth, including Scottsdale Police Department uniforms and a badge. The alleged meth dealer, 30-year-old Colt Weber, who's also the owner of a pawn business, told police that he took in the Scottsdale PD uniforms and badge as pawn items.
