City of Mesa, Arizona, sued in pawnshop bust
The Republic
The owners of a closed Mesa, Arizona, pawnshop raided by police more than a year ago have filed suit against the city, seeking $5 million in damages and thousands of dollars in attorneys fees on allegations that Mesa police falsely portrayed their business as a marketplace for gang members dealing in stolen property. Attorneys for Zan Kia Ellertson and his wife, Marianne, said that police falsely described the owners of Eazy Pickn Pawn as having orchestrated criminal activity when no charges had been brought against them. Aaron Ellertson, the couple's son and the store's manager, was arrested as part of an undercover investigation.
