Judge blocks enforcement of city database on pawnbrokers

A judge has barred New York City from operating a law enforcement database that would track transactions by pawnbrokers and other businesses selling secondhand goods. Bronx Supreme Court Justice Mitchell Danziger said a challenge brought by a loanbrokers' association and individual pawnbrokers has enough likelihood of success to warrant a preliminary injunction against enforcing the city law that established the database.

Dallas Pawn and Jewelry murder trial underway

Waxahachie Police Lt. Todd Woodruff testified on the first day in the murder trial of Dallas Pawn and Jewelry owner Phillip Tucker in the 40th Judicial District Court. Waxahachie resident Kajlon Carroll, 23, was indicted and is on trial for capital murder and is accused of taking Tucker's life on Aug. 4, 2009 while attempting to rob the pawnshop.

North Port , Florida, man arrested after pawning 103 items since March

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested North Port man on multiple charges in an investigation sparked by his excessive pawn history over the past few months. Members of the Tactical Unit began surveillance on Jesse Smith, who has pawned 103 items since March.

Yet the end of its monopoly a decade ago blunted its role as the industry's marketing edge. Challenged by Michael Kors handbags, iPads and vintage Bordeaux, gem producers including De Beers, Rio Tinto Group and Russia's OAO Alrosa last month formed the Diamond Producers Association to ensure a new generation views the jewels as the ultimate luxury and expression of romance. At stake is the future of the $80 billion diamond market as other luxury goods, especially in the U.S., show faster growth.
