Millennials big fans of prepaid cards, payday loans

Millennials shell out for convenience. That's what a new survey suggests when it comes to the generation's use of alternative financial products that often come with high fees. The survey of more than 1,000 people ages 18 to 34 by alternative financial products company Think Finance found that while 92 percent currently use a bank, nearly half, or 45 percent, say they have also used outside services including prepaid cards, check cashing, pawnshops and payday loans.

Smith & Wesson booked record sales as gun debate raged

The past 12 months have been bad for gun violence, but good for Smith & Wesson. The gun maker recently reported preliminary results showing that sales for the fiscal year ended April 30 hit a record $588 million, a 43 percent increase versus the year prior. Earnings were a record $1.22 a share, up from 40 cents a share in the prior fiscal year.

Pawnshop robbers in Florida caught on camera terrorizing employees, customers

Two robbers remain at large after attacking a customer and employees at a pawnshop during a robbery, authorities said. Police said at the men who robbed the Value Pawn in Apopka, Fla., were armed with handguns. Police said the men in ski masks smashed a jewelry case, and then held up both employees and customers and stole their wallets and cellphones.

Woman accused of defrauding Connecticut pawnshop

A Hartford, Conn., woman is accused of using a stolen debit card number to defraud a pawnshop and Sprint of almost $3,000. Jennifer Garrison-Lynch, 37, was arrested on a warrant earlier this month and charged with third-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation, eight counts of illegal use of a credit card and three counts of second-degree forgery.

Gold falls before Federal Reserve meets as investors weigh stimulus outlook

Gold declined in New York before the Federal Reserve starts a two-day meeting as investors weighed when the central bank will taper asset purchases. The Federal Open Market Committee begins its two-day policy meeting tomorrow. Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said last month the central bank, which is buying $85 billion of Treasuries and mortgage securities a month to spur the economy, could scale back stimulus efforts if the employment outlook shows sustainable improvement. Holdings in exchange-traded products backed by gold fell to the lowest since March 2011.

Rocky's Pawn Shop encounters resistance to Cathedral City, Calif., expansion

A group of residents is saying "not in our backyard" to a Cathedral City, Calif., pawnshop looking to expand operations in the city. Rocky's Pawn Shop is in the process of closing escrow on the former Bank of America building, said store manager Landon Hilker. The store is estimated to open late this summer or early fall. Rocky's also has California stores in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indio, Yucca Valley and Beaumont.

Former rental store employee sentenced in attack, theft at former customer's Kansas City, Mo., home

A former rental store employee was sentenced to 10 years in prison for severely beating an elderly customer, stealing his leased television and later pawning it for $100. Eric L. Patton, 28, of Kansas City, Mo., had pleaded guilty April 9 to first-degree assault and second-degree robbery for the Aug. 25 attack. The 88-year-old victim, a World War II veteran and a great-grandfather, suffered a head injury and abrasions.

San Juan, Texas, police search for masked men who stormed a
pawnshop at gunpoint

San Juan Police in Texas are looking for two men who stormed a pawnshop with guns in hand. The two men entered Cash American Pawn and demanded money and jewelry. The aggravated robbers demanded the customers leave and allegedly pointed their guns at employees. They were able to flee on foot with an undisclosed amount of currency and jewelry.

Ammunition shortage still hurting gun owners

The question for many gun owners these days is where to get ammunition? Gun shops and ammo dealers are struggling with a long term shortage and they say it's impacting their business. "This was a panic caused by people feeling that their rights were going to be taken from them, and they wanted to have ammunition to go along with the firearm," said Rick Burroughs, a range officer for Total Firearms in Mason, Mich.
