First Cash buying 24 pawnshops for $25.5 million

First Cash Financial Services Inc. is buying 24 Mister Money pawn shops in four states for about $25.5 million in order to help broaden its U.S. presence. The stores are located in Colorado, Kentucky, Wyoming and Nebraska. More

The device, a pen-shaped laser pointer called the DiamaPen, will be sold for $199 at Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair by Diamond Services Ltd., the sales arm of EGL Asia. The device uses lasers and can be used only with special glasses. More

Gold fell for the first time in seven sessions as the risk of a Greek exit from the euro zone subsided after parties backing a bailout for the country won an election, denting the metal's safe-haven appeal. The initial vote results drew expressions of relief from the Group of Seven industrialized economies, who said it was in "all our interests" for Greece to stay in the euro, while respecting its international bailout commitments. Those neighbors said that in 2004 a Roswell man named Tino Venturi promised them if they would permit Kennesaw to change a piece of land in their neighborhood from residential to commercial, he wouldn't allow any shops, such as pawnshops.

New North Carolina bill aims to crack down on metal theft

Copper and catalytic converters are hot items for many criminals because law enforcement officers say it's easy for someone to steal metal, go to a recycling center and trade it in for money. However, a new North Carolina law could be passed to help crack down on the crimes, and it may not target the people who do the stealing. If passed, House Bill 199 would be aimed at pawnbrokers, metal dealers, and scrap dealers who make transactions without doing the proper background check to make sure the metal customers bring to their shops isn't stolen. Surprise, Ariz., police said a new city ordinance will be an integral tool in combating the fencing of stolen property. The Surprise City Council passed an ordinance April 10 requiring pawnshops, scrap-metal dealers, and secondhand dealers to pay a $3 fee for each transaction from a customer. More
