Nearly 1 in 3 Americans owns a gun
Reuters
Almost a third of American adults own a gun, but the rate varies widely by state and tops out at almost 62 percent of people in Alaska, new survey data show. Gun ownership was closely tied to "social gun culture," wherein family and friends also own guns and think less of non-gun owners, researchers found.

Woman unearths 8.52-carat diamond at Arkansas Park
Discovery News
One of the nation’s most unusual tourist attractions is Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, which bills itself as the only diamond-producing site in the world where ordinary folks actually can dig for diamonds themselves — and keep whatever they find. Park visitors get to peruse a 37.5-acre field that's actually the eroded surface of an ancient, gem-bearing volcanic crater. Park officials make the search even easier by occasionally plowing the field to help bring the diamonds to the surface. For $6 plus a $30 deposit, they'll even rent you a wooden screen and bucket so that you can sift though the soil.

Douglas Gardner, an employee at The Pawn Shop, said the new ordinance regulating how he takes in merchandise is an inconvenience.

Outlawed by the states, payday lenders take refuge on reservations
The Huffington Post
Ken Rees had a problem. For years, his company, Think Cash, had made millions of dollars by offering poor Americans quick access to money when they needed to fix their cars, replace broken appliances or pay medical bills. Unlike the brick-and-mortar payday loan companies that dot street corners and strip malls across the country, however, Think Cash was an online venture, built with the convenience of the new economy in mind. A loan was only a few clicks away.

The recent bitcoin bump is not from Greece
Fortune
