Gold is also easy transported, something that other pretty and rare things, such as whooping cranes, can't claim. Virginia county eyes new rules for pawnbrokers

The Board of Supervisor appointed the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office in Virgina as its agent in issuing pawnbroker licenses — the first step in a process aimed at overhauling how the businesses are regulated in the county. According to a staff report reviewed by supervisors, the state code allows the Circuit Court authorize the issuance of pawnbroker permits by localities.

TV fame helps bring brisk business to Maricopa, Ariz., pawnshops

The TV show "Pawn Stars" may be based a few hours away in Las Vegas, but Arizonans like their pawnshops, too. In fact, 27 percent of state residents reported using a pawnshop within the past five years, according to a May report released by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Locally, two pawn shops have opened their doors to the public within the past seven months, a first for Maricopa.

With cooperation of pawnshops, precious metals database expanding

A database run by the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office that has been instrumental in hundreds of arrests will now be extended into Lackawanna County, Pa. The database keeps track of precious metals and second-hand items, such as cameras or tools, sold in pawnshops.

Midway, NC, officials approve ordinance addressing pawnshops

Pawnshops are now being allowed in Midway, N.C. Members of the Midway Town Council unanimously agreed recently to allow pawnshops in certain areas of the town. Andy Goodall, Midway's planner, said pawnshops are permitted in areas zoned as community shopping district.

Clerk shoots at suspect during attempted robbery at Florida pawnshop

A clerk at a Kissimmee, Fla., pawnshop fired a shot at a man who tried to rob the business, police said. The clerk and another worker at Queen of Pawns suffered minor injuries, and the suspect got away. It was unclear whether he was hurt.
