Hardcore Pawn's Seth Gold awarded 'Pawnbroker of the Year'
PR Web
The National Pawnbrokers Association, the leading trade association representing the pawn industry, announced today the nomination and unanimous selection of Seth Gold, star of the Tru TV's hit series Hardcore Pawn, as NPA's "Pawnbroker of the Year" for 2013. Gold's nomination stems from his tireless commitment to supporting the pawn industry, community outreach, bolstering the association's charitable giving campaigns and fostering strong relationships with his community and local leaders.

The global economy and your local pawnshop
American Public Media's Marketplace
We measure the health of the American economy all kinds of ways: New housing starts, GDP, retail and unemployment. Also? Pawnshops. Cash America — the biggest pawnshop company in the country — said profits probably won't be as good as everybody's expecting. The firm blames mostly weaker demand for both pawn and consumer loans. That lower demand could also mean that Americans are starting to feel a bit more financially stable.

Peninsula Pawn Shop in Maryland part of ancient tradition
The Banner
Gone are the days of the green eye-shades perched low on the foreheads of pawnbrokers who lurk in small, dirty shops protected by heavy metal bars. Pawnshops were considered disreputable in popular culture and seen as harbingers of deteriorating neighborhoods, frequented by criminals with "hot goods," or by the poverty stricken who hock their last valuable items to buy drugs.

Pawnshops' popularity in Phoenix raises concerns
Cronkite News Service via The Arizona Republic
Arizonans were much more likely than the rest of the nation to turn to a pawnshop to get cash, according to a recent survey by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, or FINRA, a private non-profit. The FINRA Foundation's Financial Capability report found that 18 percent of Americans reported using a pawnshop within the past five years while 27 percent of Arizonans surveyed said they had done so. In Phoenix, nearly three dozen pawnshops have cropped up during that same time period.
