Pawnshops: The poor man's bank
Worcester Mag
Carmen Bosque says the flattened gold wedding band she held in her hand would go to "my man." She found it on the street, she says, flat as a pancake after apparently being driven over by a car or truck. Asmar Akman takes the ring from her and asks what she wants to do with it. "Can you fix it?" she asks. A jeweler by trade who studied computer engineering at Hofstra University, Akman turns the ring over in his hand, examining it closely. "I don't know," he says. … He tells her it will cost $20 if he is successful, $40 if he is not. She says she does not have $40, but tells him to go ahead. About 15-20 minutes later, Akman is back behind the jewelry case inside his store, Pleasant Pawn Shop in Worcester, Mass.

Gold rush trash is Information Age treasure
The Associated Press via USA Today
Across the West, early miners digging for gold, silver and copper had no idea that one day something else very valuable would be buried in the piles of dirt and rocks they tossed aside. There's a rush in the U.S. to find key components of cellphones, televisions, weapons systems, wind turbines, MRI machines and the regenerative brakes in hybrid cars, and old mine tailings piles just might be the answer. They may contain a group of versatile minerals the periodic table called rare earth elements.
