Operation Choke Point bill set for committee mark up
ACA International
The House Financial Services Committee will meet to review and mark up 14 bills today, July 28, including U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer's measure against Operation Choke Point. Operation Choke Point is program in which the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and U.S. Department of Justice reportedly applied pressure to financial institutions in order to cut off financial services to certain licensed, legally operating industries, including debt collection.

Ex-preacher competent to stand trial for 3 slayings in Danville, Kentucky, pawnshop
The Lexington Herald-Leader
The former preacher charged with three counts of murder in a 2013 Danville, Kentucky, pawnshop shooting was found competent to stand trial. Commonwealth's Attorney Richard Bottoms said Kenneth Allen Keith's trial will move forward starting with a status hearing Sept. 1.

4 indicted in theft of guns from Saucier, Mississippi, pawnshop

A federal grand jury has indicted four men, three of them felons, following an investigation in the theft of 49 firearms from a Saucier, Mississippi, business. Tyson Lee Gaines Sr., 34, Kevin Gerard Edwards, 50, and Willie Carter, 34, are accused of stealing the firearms from Friendly Pawn and Auto on U.S. 49 over the weekend of June 6 and selling them.

    Gold holds above 5-1/2-year low as dollar weakens, bears still dominate
    Reuters
    Gold found respite from recent hefty losses, trading just under $1,100 an ounce as a weaker dollar helped it up from 5-1/2 year lows, but expectations for a near-term U.S. interest rate hike was seen keeping momentum firmly with the bears. The Federal Reserve will hold a two-day meeting this week where policymakers are likely to send more signals pointing to a rate rise later in the year as the U.S. economy strengthens.

    Lafayette theater shooter bought gun legally, police say

    John Russell "Rusty" Houser methodically shot 11 people in a Lafayette, Louisiana, movie theater using a handgun he legally purchased from an Alabama pawnshop, authorities said Friday. Houser stood up in the theater where the comedy "Trainwreck" was showing and fired off one 10-round clip, Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said at a press conference.

    Commissioners in Flathead County, Montana, to consider controversial pawn shop ordinance
    KECI-TV
    A controversial ordinance requiring pawnshops to report pawned items to the Flathead County Sheriff's Department in Montana is expected to go before the Flathead County Commissioners. Kalispell enacted a similar, city-wide ordinance in April. Since then, more than $20,000 worth of stolen jewelry, firearms and bicycles have been recovered, police officials said.

    New Kansas City, Missouri, pawnshop requirements include video records, item holding period

    An often easy crime – at least in the past, in Kansas City, Missouri — was to pawn stolen items for cash at a pawnshop. Detective Jeff Mehrer says when he makes the connection in a case and goes to the shop, the items have usually been sold.
