New legislation being pushed by a bipartisan team of House lawmakers would allow payday lenders the opportunity to reach more people interested in receiving payday loans. Cash America International Inc., the world's largest pawnshop operator, fell the most in seven years after posting results that missed estimates and saying third- quarter earnings will be lower than last year. Cash America plummeted 19 percent to close at $36.69 in New York, the most since April 2005. It was the biggest decline in the 102-company Standard & Poor's SmallCap Financials Index. More

A customer of Trading Place Pawn Shop in Monroe, Ga., remains in serious but stable condition after an accidental shooting at the business' firing range. Police were dispatched to the Monroe business after reports of someone being shot accidentally. According to the report, the victim was at the counter filling out a range agreement when another customer entered holding a Springfield Armory .45 caliber automatic handgun. The customer was speaking with an employee about a problem with the weapon and began to "manipulate the slide on the weapon," according to the report. It was at this time the weapon discharged and struck the victim in his upper right hip. More

Authorities said burglars in Florida stole jewelry, electronics, a bow and arrow, GPS, cash, watches, various tools, clothing items, a cable box, house plants, checkbook, and collectible coins from a safe, all valued at $5,383. On July 23 detectives found a pawned ring and earrings at Gold Pros in l. They obtained the transaction that showed a copy of Scott's driver's license and that he had been paid $300 for the stolen items. More

Business was slow at first, but grew gradually and really began to pick up considerably after they hired two young women about two months ago to walk up and down the sidewalk out front holding up signs advertising the business, which is set back about 100 feet from the road. Pennsylvania pawnshop owner to forfeit $900,000, serve 6 years

The owner of Gary's Steals and Deals pawnshops in Portage, Pa. was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay a $900,000 forfeiture by U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III in Harrisburg, Pa. Gary E. Vaughn 38, pleaded guilty in December to conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud. Prosecutors said he hired drug-addicted "runners" to steal gear such as digital cameras and power tools from area retailers, then sold the stolen merchandise in his stores and, primarily, on eBay.
