EZCORP announces new strategy, structure and business focus

EZCORP, Inc. announced a major change in strategy following an intensive six-month review of all company activities. In a series of moves the company is describing as "transformational," EZCORP will focus on growing its core pawn brokering operations in the U.S. and Mexico and its Grupo Finmart business in Mexico. The company will simplify its operating structure by moving from a divisional to a functional business model.

Gun trafficking in pawnshops

Adding another barrier to gun trafficking may have been an unintended side effect of newly signed Illinois legislation regarding pawnshops. The law says pawnbrokers can't take in or buy items where the serial number or other identifying marks have been removed, altered, or destroyed.

    Pawnshops fight stigma of stolen items

    Pawnshops have a stigma for being a place to sell stolen items, but shop owners say that's not accurate and so do the laws. Kansas City, Missouri, recently enacted a new law to prevent stolen items from being sold by pawnshops. The law requires shops to keep video of the item and its seller for at least 60 days and requires that the shop hold all items for 10 days before selling them to the public.

    Sony unveils smartphones with 13-megapixel front camera for selfies

    Sony is trying to woo selfie-taking consumers with its latest two smartphones. The Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 both include 13-megapixel cameras on the front and back. That's a change of pace since typically smartphone makers reserve the better cameras for the rear since since people traditionally take pictures of what's around them. But the selfie craze of taking pictures of yourself apparently convinced Sony to adopt a hefty camera on the front as well.

    Police: Pawnshop records lead to suspected guitar thief

    Through pawnshop registries, police have tracked down a man they suspect stole at least four high-end guitars worth nearly $10,000 from separate Austin, Texas-area stores in June and July, according to an arrest warrant. Authorities recovered four stolen Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro guitars from several Austin-area pawnshops, after the serial numbers on the missing guitars matched those inventoried at the stores, according to the arrest warrant.

    Stafford Township, New Jersey, pawnshop owner faces gun, fencing charges

    A Stafford Township, New Jersey, pawnshop owner was arrested following a seven-month undercover investigation into alleged illegal sales of firearms and fencing of stolen property, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said. The investigation centered on Shore Discount Bedding/Shore Gold and Pawn in Manahawkin, New Jersey, authorities said.

    Armed men storm into Texas pawnshop, steal merchandise

    Three armed men stormed in and robbed a pawnshop in Liberty County, Texas, and it was caught on camera. The incident happened at the Cash America Pawn Shop. Officers said the men got away with some merchandise.
