Report: EZCorp to cut almost 100 Austin, Texas, jobs after abandoning payday lending

EZCorp Inc. will lay off 98 workers from its Austin, Texas, operations – roughly one quarter of its local workforce – as the company exits the payday-lending business to focus more on its core pawnshop division, reports the Austin American-Statesman. According to the report, the Austin-based company notified the Texas Workforce Commission of the impending job cuts in a letter.

A top Senate Republican introduces gun background check bill

The U.S. Senate's No. 2 Republican leader, who is backed by the National Rifle Association, proposed a gun bill designed to block potentially threatening people from obtaining a firearm. Republican Senator John Cornyn from Texas wants to reward local communities and states for sending more information about potentially dangerous, mentally ill individuals to the federal background check system for firearm purchasers.

7-month investigation leads to arrest of pawnshop owner

A seven-month undercover investigation has led to the arrest of a Manahawkin, New Jersey, pawnshop owner, Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato and Stafford Township Police Chief Joseph Giberson announced on July 30. Dennis Ayala, 56, of Shore Gold and Pawn has been charged with possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession/sale of a firearm and pawnbroker selling firearms, according to police. Bail has been set at $150,000 with no 10 percent.

Pawnshop burglar used sledgehammer on roof

A man used a sledgehammer to break a hole in a Corpus Christi, Texas, pawnshop's roof so he could burglarize the business, according to a police news release. The manager said the suspect used a ladder from the rear of the shop to gain access to the roof and then broke a hole in the ceiling, according to a police news release.
