Perception of pawning changes
Anderson Independent Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Silver, gold, diamonds and guns, the most valuable items to bring to a pawnshop, sound like the ingredients for a tried-and-true country song. Pawnshops have long been stereotyped as seedy settings where people desperate for dollars sell their wares. That image is being changed by a public starving for jobs in a down economy. The popularity of cable reality shows such as "Hardcore Pawn" and "Pawn Stars" is also changing the image of stores. Many customers turn to pawnshops instead of banks for loans and also for safe places to leave their weapons. More

Gold prices rose, extending the last session's recovery from four days of declines, as investors bet that last week's better-than-expected jobs data would not be enough to head off another round of monetary easing in the United States. The metal briefly dipped in the wake of data showing that U.S. employers added more jobs than expected last month but quickly rebounded as traders digested a rise in the jobless rate. More
