Fine wines pawned for ready cash
The Financial Times
Investors who desperately need cash are pawning their bottles of Château Haut-Brion, Lafite Rothschild, Margaux and Mouton Rothschild. As the sluggish economy drags on, the practice of parting with fine wines for a few months to secure short-term loans of $100,000 or more at interest rates of 2.5 to 4 percent a month is gaining traction, said Paul Aitken, founder and chief executive of Borro, a Manhattan, N.Y., lender.

Speculators cut bullish and bearish bets on gold simultaneously for the first time in two months as prices advanced to the highest since mid-June on signs of strengthening physical demand. The net-bullish position rose 18 percent to 56,604 futures and options by Aug. 13, as the 17 percent contraction in short bets exceeded the 3 percent drop in long wagers, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission data show.

'Small appliance failure' led to pawnshop fire in Mansfield, Ohio

The fire at Johnson Brothers Jewelry and Loan in Mansfield, Ohio, was ruled accidental by Fire Capt. Amy McElvain. The fire was caused by a small appliance failure in the store's basement, McElvain said. She declined further comment until she talks with the Johnsons' insurance company.

Reckless driver in hurry to get to pawnshop

A Louisville, Ky., man was arrested after driving recklessly and going through a median, according to Louisville Metro Police. An officer said he observed Devin Arnold, 20, driving at a high rate of speed nearly causing an accident. According to an arrest report, Arnold told police he wanted to get to a pawnshop before it closed.

Police recover stolen items from New Jersey community pawnshops, arrest township man

A township man was arrested on burglary charges after police recovered stolen property from a home in several pawnshops in Jackson Township, N.J., police said. Michael Newman, 35, was charged with burglary and theft, police said. He was processed and released on a summons pending a court appearance.

Cathedral City, Calif., OK's pawnshop — with restrictions

City leaders in Cathedral City, Calif., has approved Rocky's Pawn Shop to move into a Palm Canyon Drive location, to be open later this year. Residents complained that the addition of Palm Canyon Drive would increase crime in the area.

11 guns stolen from Lakeland, Fla., pawnshop

Detectives with the Polk County Sheriff's Office are seeking information about a burglary at the Gator Pawn shop in Lakeland, Fla. A man used a crowbar to smash into the store, and then smashed display cases at the front of the store.
