Pawnshops join in crime-fighting efforts

The Outagamie County Sheriff's Department in Wisconsin says two men could soon face more than 100 charges in connection with a burglary spree. The burglaries involved mainly rental storage facilities and some large recreational vehicles. Authorities were able to crack the case because some stolen goods ended up at pawnshops. More

For Robert Wademan, running a pawnshop isn't something to feel ashamed about. He's proud of the Oxnard, Calif., business he has run for more than a decade. So when Wademan, owner of Saul's Jewelry and Loan, spoke at the Oxnard Planning Commission, requesting that he move his run-down shop a few doors down where he could make improvements, it was personal. "A lot of people don’t understand the pawnshop," Wademan said. "I don't only run a pawnshop here. I live here. I have lived here for 20 years." More

Gold is likely to hit a new high with gold futures for December delivery expected to breach the June 21 high of $1,266.50 an ounce in the next two to three weeks. The October futures traded on the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) is expected to cross Rs 19,200 in the coming weeks. The Federal Reserve chairman’s assessment of the US economy confirms the view of most gold traders that the metal is likely to continue working its way higher in the weeks ahead. More

Ordinance proposed to limit pawnshops in Virginia community

A proposed ordinance would allow the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors in Virginia to limit the number of pawnshops in the county. Planning and Zoning Director Brandon Davis presented the proposal to the supervisors' Public Safety and Code Committee. "Are we required by law to have this?" asked District 4 Supervisor Sharon Baroncelli, who is the committee's chairwoman. Davis said the county is under no such requirement. More

She also has to deal with uncertainty about how much the SBA will be able to help those companies. The U.K.'s largest pawnbroker has reported a 70 percent increase in its half-year profits to £14.5 million. H&T Pawnbrokers said volumes at its Gold Bars outlets more than tripled. It expects its full-year profits to beat forecasts, citing television advertising which has apparently increased awareness of high market prices for gold and has fuelled desire among people to sell it. More
