Texas No. 1 in gun purchase requests

Texas is leading the nation in the number of people seeking federal permission to buy guns. Federal statistics reviewed by the Houston Chronicle show 1.2 million people in Texas through the end of September filled out applications for background checks. At that rate, last year's record 1.4 million requests will be surpassed by the end of 2013. "The gun business is doing well," Rob Elder, head of the Houston division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said.

New $100 bill to debut

But three years ago the Federal Reserve announced that a problem with the currency's new security measures was causing the bills to crease during printing, which left blank spaces on the bills.

In August in Texas, a robber with a knife stole cash and handguns from a local pawnshop. In September in Florida, three armed men smashed jewelry cases with sledgehammers and got away with $150,000 in jewelry and watches. In September in Kentucky, pawnshop owners and a customer were shot and killed by robber. No arrest has been made, and police are still searching for the robber.

Theft victims in Oregon town want stricter rules for pawnshops

The crooks busted their way in through a door and made off with $14,000 worth of jewelry and other property in Pleasant Hill, Ore. "I know it's just material things," said Michele Henderson, one of the victims, "but it's something that we could have passed on to our kids that will no longer be available to be part of our family." Henderson's sister Kathleen said the thieves have not just stolen rings and necklaces.

Florida Power & Light employee accused of pawning more than $16K worth of computers

A tech support employee with Florida Power & Light stole more than $16,000 worth of company computers to feed a drug habit, according to a West Palm Beach Police arrest report. Police arrested John Anise, 28, of West Palm Beach, when investigators found 20 pawnshop transactions under his name dating back to June.
