Attorneys general oppose payday lenders' bid for federal charter

States struck back against payday lenders' attempt to duck both state laws and the reach of the nation's newest consumer protection agency. Ohio's Mike DeWine joined 41 other attorneys general in urging U.S. Senate and House leaders to oppose HR 6139, which preempt states from enforcing laws aimed at curbing high-cost, short-term loans. Deal lifts chances of pawnshop law

After months of contentious talks, public hearings, revisions and debate, local secondhand dealers and Albany County, N.Y., lawmakers appear close to an agreement over the newest version of the county's much-discussed "pawn shop law." The potential accord was worked out, according to Jason Pierce, president of the Albany County Dealers Association. It comes two days before the proposed law is to go before the County Legislature for the second time in four months. More
