It's a new gold rush
Star Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Since the recession began, cash-hungry consumers have been selling broken herringbone necklaces, high-school class rings and single earrings. Instead of turning to a bank, where it's become increasingly difficult to obtain a loan, many are drawn to pawnshops — the original banker — to sell items or use them for collateral loans with the hopes of returning for them when they have cash. A 2010 National Pawnbrokers Association survey found that the average pawn loan amount increased from $80 to $100 between 2008 and 2009. The study also found an 8 percent increase in the number of pawn loan defaults between 2008 and 2009. Survey data for 2010 is not yet available. More

Online pawning is a trend that may be catching on with Florida consumers who need a quick, convenient personal loan to pay bills or take a vacation. Web-based pawnshops work much like traditional walk-in shops, offering short-term loans in exchange for loan fees and, of course, collateral — often in the form of watches, jewelry, electronics, musical instruments and firearms.
