Law lets IRS seize accounts on suspicion, no crime required

Using a law designed to catch drug traffickers, racketeers and terrorists by tracking their cash, the government has gone after run-of-the-mill business owners and wage earners without so much as an allegation that they have committed serious crimes. The government can take the money without ever filing a criminal complaint, and the owners are left to prove they are innocent. Many give up.

Pawned laptop leads to child porn charges against Maryland man

A CD left in a pawned laptop led to the arrest of a Hagerstown, Maryland, man on child pornography charges, according to Washington County District Court documents. David James Montgomery, 58, is charged with child pornography depicting a sex act, soliciting a subject for child pornography, permitting a subject to take part in child pornography and possession of child pornography, court documents said.

101-carat diamond sells for nearly $5 million at Christie's
Forbes
After record-breaking auction prices in recent years for fancy colored diamonds it appears that colorless diamonds are now nudging their way back into the spotlight. Seven of the top 10 lots at Christie's Important Jewels auction featured colorless diamonds with five of the items selling for more than $1 million (including commission and fees).

Authorities search for suspects wanted in smash-and-grab robbery at Texas pawnshop

Harris County Sheriff's deputies in Texas are searching for two smash-and-grab robbers who struck a pawnshop on the north side of town. The crooks robbed Sun Belt Pawn. Deputies said they smashed the glass cases, grabbed jewelry and fled the scene.

Detectives looking for owner of badges found at pawnshop

Detectives are looking for the rightful owners of a couple of vintage fire department badges. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department says that someone was trying to sell the badges at a local pawn shop. Apparently, the person who tried to pawn them off had no reason or explanation as to why he had them.

6-pound gold chunk sells for $400,000

The term nugget doesn't quite do it justice. This thing is more like a whopper. A more than 6-pound chunk of gold sold over the weekend for $400,000, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. An anonymous Bay Area buyer snatched up the "Butte nugget" — named for the Northern California county in which it was discovered this summer — at the San Francisco Fall Antiques Show.

Lawsuit filed against pawnshop alleges harassment and discrimination

A Bakersfield, California, pawnshop is being sued by a former employee for alleged harassment and discrimination including threats and derogatory comments regarding the plaintiff's sexual orientation and pointing a gun at him. Adam Rendon is seeking compensatory damages from Bakersfield's Best Pawn including lost wages, bonuses and retirement benefits as well as general damages for mental pain, anguish and emotional distress.
