'Pawn Stars' Rick Harrison on fame, imitators and why his fiancée will never be on the show
The Huffington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rick Harrison has no complaints these days. His hugely popular reality show, "Pawn Stars," has just been renewed for another 80 episodes, and for the first time in his life he's living with a house full of women: his fiancée, Deanna Burditt, and her three teenage daughters. "I have three boys, she has three girls &mash; we're literally the Brady Bunch!" Harrison says, laughing. Being outnumbered by women has been a bit of an adjustment for Harrison, who grew up with two brothers and has three sons who are 9, 27 and 29 now. "If you live in a house full of women, they're a lot more brutal about making you clean up than a house full of guys!" More

Economy and television shows make pawnshops cool again
The Denver Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Marilyn Vigil watched patiently as the pawnshop employee weighed the several gold chains she hoped would amount to a needed loan. Cash America's revenue up, income hurt by charges
The Associated Press via Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cash America, a pawnshop and payday lender, reported a big drop in earnings but still beat Wall Street's expectations for the third quarter. The company said the profit decline was largely because of one-time expenses related to trimming operations in Mexico. Revenue jumped about 10 percent from a year ago, and the company expects future growth will be fueled by a need for loans. Cash America International Inc. makes money from loans to consumers, from service fees and from selling jewelry, electronics and other goods in its pawnshops. More

Manchester, NH, pawnshop ordinance helps city catch thieves
The Union Leader    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
City police defended a controversial city ordinance that requires Manchester, N.H., pawnshops and dealers in second-hand goods to report goods they buy for resale and hold on to them for 30 days in case the person selling them is trying to use the shop to "fence" stolen goods. Pawnbrokers, coin dealers and other sellers of second-hand merchandise say the ordinance's requirement that a fee be paid and each item entered into a database is burdensome. They also say that it forces them to tie up their cash in inventory that has to be held for 30 days before it can be sold. More
