Millions of Americans are outside the financial system
Center for American Progress
New data by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or FDIC, showed that 68 million adults in America are disconnected from the financial system in some way. Currently, 17 million are unbanked — meaning they do not have any bank accounts at all — and another 51 million are underbanked — meaning that they have bank accounts but rely on alternative financial providers, such as check cashers and pawnshops, to meet some of their banking needs.

Trial begins in pawnshop, liquor store holdups

Trial began for a man facing federal charges stating he shot and paralyzed an East St. Louis pawn store owner and robbed a Belleville, Illinois, liquor store. The man who didn't expect to survive the robbery testified from his wheelchair about how Timothy R. Collier went from being a potential customer to his potential executioner.

Pawnshop customers leap to action during store robbery

Corpus Christi Police in Texas said customers and store employees leaped to action during a robbery at a pawnshop. Police said a man walking around First Cash Pawn, broke the glass counter top of a display and attempted to take jewelry from the case.

America's gun stores are overstocked

Gun dealers have overstocked, and now they're just selling off the inventory that they have, without ordering much from manufacturers. Gun sales surged to unprecedented levels following the Newtown, Connecticut, massacre of December 2012, driven by concerns about increased federal regulations, particularly against assault rifles.

It all started in 1940, when Les Gold's grandfather opened up Sams Loan Office, which was located in the spot that MGM Casino sits today. He made his first sale at the age of 7 and was immediately hooked. He opened American Jewelry & Loan in 1978 in Oak Park, Michigan. In 1992 he relocated the store to Detroit. The former bowling alley is now a 150,000 square-foot facility operating with 50 employees.
