The St. Nick of Market Street
Maui No Ka 'Oi magazine
Richard Dan has been called the unofficial mayor of Market Street in Wailuku, Hawaii. On one block between Main and Vineyard, five storefronts are his: a pawnshop, a payday loan, a general-merchandise store, a space he describes as "the outlet of unclaimed goods," and Kama'aina Loan & Cash for Gold, where astute shoppers can snag high-end accessories or fine art at surprisingly low prices.

Microcredit for Americans
The New York Times
On a recent Thursday, dozens of Latina immigrants clustered in a small, noisy second-floor office in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, waiting for one of a half-dozen loan officers to call their names and hand over a check. Children loitered in the stairwell or sprawled, calflike, over their mothers' laps. The loans were recorded the old-fashioned way, with ink, in green passbooks that enumerated the borrowers' commitments to "exercise responsible financial behavior," "seek preventative health care" and meet each week in a "comfortable and safe place."

The Flawless Factor
Rapaport Magazine
The D Flawless term is tossed around so easily, it would seem to be a stone that anyone with enough money could buy. But D Flawless (D, FL) and D Internally Flawless (D, IF) diamonds are nearly as scarce as unicorns. D, FL is the most transparent and perfect of diamonds — no visible flaws at 10-power magnification and no discernible body color — and because of those qualities, it represents the very pinnacle of the diamond pyramid. D, FL diamonds add glamour and excitement to the diamond industry and give buyers and sellers an almost unattainable benchmark for quality, beauty and desirability.
